Research & DevelopmentRESEARCH PROJECTThe objective of this project was to develop a non-toxic, bio-degradable, ecofriendly and economical surface coating for extension of shelf life of mature Alphonso mango. Post harvest losses in mangoes have been estimated in the range of 25-40% from harvesting to consumption stage. Present methods of minimizing post- harvest losses like low temperature storage, use of chemicals like waxes and modified atmospheric packaging have got limitations. Calgon Bio-Organics Pvt ltd in collaboration with a premier scientific Institute, CSIR, has developed a polysaccharide based surface coating. This surface coating forms a semi-permeable membrane which creates a modified atmosphere, similar to control atmosphere used in storage but at low cost. It also forms a physical and chemical barrier against invading pathogens. The technology developed by Calgon Bio-organics Pvt Ltd in collaboration with CSIR:
The ingredients of the formulations are approved by US FDA and recognized as GRAS. |
